Shelled sunflower seeds are small, pale and tender, with a mild, slightly sweet taste and a soft crunch. They need no preparation, so they are one of the easiest ways to add texture to a meal. Eat them as they are, or toast them for a deeper flavour.

Ways to use it

  • Scatter over salads, soups or stir-fried vegetables for a little crunch.
  • Stir into porridge, granola or yoghurt.
  • Fold into bread, muffin or biscuit dough.
  • Toast in a dry pan over medium heat for a few minutes, stirring often, until lightly golden, then season with a pinch of salt.
  • Blend with garlic, lemon juice and a little oil into a thick, creamy spread for bread and vegetables.

If you want a milder taste, use the seeds raw. If you want something closer to a snack, toast them and let them cool fully before storing, so they stay crisp.

Storing it

Keep the pack sealed in a cool, dry cupboard, away from sunlight and heat. After opening, move the seeds into a jar or box with a tight lid and close it each time. If they ever smell sharp or stale, it is time to stop using them.
